Two Students Selected for Kitware’s Diverse Open Door Scholarship Program
Kitware has awarded up to $20,000 in scholarship funds to two Black high school seniors pursuing a computer science degree
Clifton Park, New York. (May 13, 2021) – Kitware, Inc. is pleased to announce the two recipients of its Open Door Scholarship: Erika Abumere, from New Town High School in Owings Mills, Maryland, and Emi Grady-Willis, from Shenendehowa High School in Clifton Park, New York. As a software company that is passionate about creating a more diverse and inclusive workplace, Kitware recently launched its Open Door Scholarship program for Black and African American high school seniors pursuing a degree in computer science. Kitware leadership was inspired to start this scholarship program because of their belief that diversity benefits all, and their strong desire to make a difference in the computing industry.
Erika and Emi will each receive a $5,000 scholarship for the 2021/2022 academic year. This scholarship can be renewed annually for a total of $20,000 over four years. Each student will also be offered a paid summer internship at Kitware for the duration of their award.
The selection criteria for this program was predominately based on academic merit. Applicants needed to demonstrate a passion for science and technology and were asked to include a written statement about why they are pursuing a degree in computer science. Both of these students impressed Kitware with their real-world experience and their responses to the essay portion proved they are motivated to make a positive impact in the world.
“Not only are we looking to help support a more diverse industry, we are also looking to attract talented individuals who are passionate about computer science and provide them with access to skills and mentorship to help them succeed,” said Lisa Avila, co-founder and CEO of Kitware. “We are honored to help these students on their journey, and look forward to watching them grow and make an impact on the world.”
Kitware will be accepting Open Door Scholarship applications for the 2022-2023 academic school year in late 2021. Please visit the website for a list of the application requirements and terms and conditions, and to apply: kitware.com/scholarships.
