A VolView web application for implant planification
Kitware is proud to present its collaboration with Accurator Services to develop a web application for implant planification.
Accurator Services was founded in 2022 by Frederic Bousquet, a French surgeon dentist specialized in implantology. Dr. Bousquet’s passion for innovation led him to develop a revolutionary technique aimed at improving the precision and efficiency of implant surgeries while minimizing invasiveness.
Dr. Bousquet’s technique involves creating a surgical guide for implant surgery prior to the procedure, thereby streamlining the process and reducing the need for invasive surgery. This innovative approach not only enhances patient safety and comfort but also ensures more accurate implant placement.
A VolView-based online application for implant planning
To complement Dr. Bousquet’s groundbreaking technique, Kitware developed a single-page workflow-based user-friendly web application for implant planning. It only takes 4 steps:
- Load CBCT DICOM files : Users can effortlessly load DICOM files directly into their browser, ensuring data security and accessibility. Data is never transferred over the network, it stays on the computer of the user, within the browser.
- Select a tooth on a schema: Multiple implants can be planned this way.
- Select, place and orient the implant: Using Multi-Planar Reconstruction(MPR) , the user can precisely place the implant and adjust its orientation as needed.
- Generate a report
The web application offers the flexibility to start and save as a file a surgery plan for future reference. This enables dental professionals to efficiently manage their workflow and seamlessly resume planning sessions as needed.

Powered by VolView
VolView is an open source web application developed by Kitware to visualize and analyze medical files. It can be customized and rebranded for specific workflows.
While the visualization and processing is done by the web browser, it is also possible to defer heavy processing (such as AI algorithms) server side via a light python server.
Future work
Future work will consist in detecting automatically radio opaque stems within the CBCT by leveraging itk.wasm. Panoramic views could also be integrated using curve planar reformation (CPR) from vtk.js
For a firsthand experience of the web application’s capabilities, a demo version is available on Accurator’s website.
