Dr. Terry Yoo Receives Award for Leadership in Open Science
We would like to congratulate Dr. Terry Yoo on receiving the 2013 Hubert H. Humphrey Award for Service to America. This award is presented each year to those “within HHS who contribute to the common good and well-being of our nation’s citizens through leadership and service.” According to the Lister Hill National Center for Biomedical Communications, “Dr. Yoo was specifically cited for his leadership in open science through his work on public software that has become the standard for 3-dimensional biomedical image analysis in both commercial and academic communities.”
This leadership and service includes Dr. Yoo’s role as the National Library of Medicine’s Project Manager for ITK. As the father of ITK, Dr. Yoo coordinated the six prime contractors that made up the Insight Software Consortium. These consortium members included three commercial partners (GE Corporate R&D; Kitware, Inc.; and MathSoft (now Insightful)) and the three academic partners (University of North Carolina (UNC), University of Tennessee (UT), and University of Pennsylvania (UPenn)).
Today, ITK has over 1,400,000 lines of code and 256 contributors. Kitware is extremely grateful to Dr. Yoo for his vision, leadership, and support for ITK; it is a key technology in our toolbox.
